The opening of the Borders Railway has brought economic benefits to Edinburgh, the Lothians and the Borders with over 700,000 people using the route in the first six months significantly ahead of expectations.   It has given areas on the route many benefits including new housing developments, an increase in tourism and an increase in business.   It has also given Border businesses easy access to Scotland’s Capital City.  One such business, Borders accountancy firm JRW, has capitalised on this.

JRW recently opened an office in Edinburgh in the centrally located Castle Terrace which gives easy access to the railway and also to the Edinburgh business sector.  As one of the largest Chartered Accountants in the Scottish Borders with offices in Hawick, Galashiels, Langholm and Peebles the firm were keen to expand their business into Edinburgh, allowing them and their diverse range of clients a place to work and meet in the heart of the city.

Kevin Crowford, Partner at JRW said:

“We have been eagerly anticipating the economic opportunities that the Borders Railway would bring and are delighted with the results it has brought to the area in the first year of operation.  It seemed an ideal time for us as a growing Borders business to expand and locate our fifth office in Edinburgh.  We look forward to welcoming businesses to our new office in the heart of the Capital”.

Busy Summer 2014 for Rachel

Staff member Rachel Lauder, based in our Galashiels office, has had a busy Summer this year as the St Ronan's Standard Bearer's Lass. As well as a hectic 10 days for the St Ronan's Games Week her role also involves a number of visits to all the other Borders towns' annual celebrations, with Penicuik, Biggar and Edinburgh having their own events as well.

With the season heading to its last event (at Coldstream), before a brief gap to the Edinburgh celebrations, we had a quick presentation as a 'Congratulations' from all at JRW.

Capital Success

Local accountancy firm JRW have just raised over £3,400 for two very worthy Scottish Borders charities.

A team of nine from the company took part in the Business Challenge category of the BUPA Great Edinburgh Run earlier this month to raise funds for both the Margaret Kerr Unit Appeal at the BGH and Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue.

And the team did the Borders proud, with their first four finishers winning the prize for being the first Small Business Team in the race. Most of the team are newcomers to running but trained really hard to support these two great local causes.

Steve Penny, Team Leader from Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue said “A donation such as this makes a huge difference to our funds. The team’s waterproof shell jackets are needing to be replaced and this donation now allows us to go ahead with this”.

Running for the Borders

A team of nine from the company are swapping their business suits for running kit this Autumn when they take part in the BUPA Great Edinburgh Run on 7th October hailed as the UK’s most scenic urban course.

Partner in the firm Alister Biggar said “Most of the team are newcomers to running but have been training really hard for the event. We are running for charity in the Business Challenge category and proceeds will be split between two very good local causes, The Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue Team and the Margaret Kerr Unit Appeal at the BGH.”

Team member Joanne Gibson said “We are proud to be able to raise funds for both of these fantastic local charities and support the wonderful work that they do here in the Borders. We aim to raise a total of £3,000 and are already off to a flying start.”

The JRW team will join thousands of runners on the undulating 10km route which goes through the heart of historic Edinburgh starting and finishing in the beautiful surroundings of Holyrood Park, in the shadow of The Palace of Holyrood House and Arthur’s Seat.
